Board proclaims Sunday, April 17 to Saturday, April 23, 2022, to be Hot Springs Village Native Plant Week
At the March 16, 2022 Board Meeting, Board Chair, Joanie Corry presented Norma Wall, Past President, PR, and Webmaster of the Hot Springs Village Audubon Society a proclamation designating April 17-23 to be Native Plant Week in the Village.
Corry said, “Native Plants are an important part of Arkansas’ natural heritage, history, and identity.” There are more than 2,300 native plant species, which make for a diverse state, and 11 of these species are found nowhere else in the world. Some of these species are threatened.
“Native plants provide high-quality food and shelter for Arkansas native wildlife, including birds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.” “Native plants also support more than 300 species of resident and migratory birds in Arkansas, many of which are a concern and increasingly threatened…,” stated Corry.
Ms. Walls thanked the POA Parks and Recreation Department as they have been very helpful with bringing forward the proclamation. “Our goals at Audubon are to protect and preserve birds and places they need. We have over 200 species of birds here in the Village. Just think about planting native because that is the reason they are here in the first place, because of the plant life that is here. When you want to replace something in your own garden or yard, think about planting a native plant, which helps feed and protect the birds. Thank you.”

Kudos to the HSVPOA Board for this declaration! I also highly recommend the use of native plants in our landscapes and wish more would consider them. They’re beneficial to our environment as well as being friendly to our birds, bees, butterflies and forest creatures.
