Edited on 1-10-22. Since I originally wrote this article, there have been many restaurant changes in the past week or so. I have crossed out the now incorrect information in this article and added corrections. Here is a link where Greg Jones explains what happened with the Xplore restaurants. Here is a link where Danny Goynes explains what happened with Kroc-Coo’s. Here is a link to the latest information from the POA on the golf course restaurants. I apologize for the confusion. Below is the original article with strikethroughs and new information in purple.
Villagers, you asked for it and you got it! Change is in the air! For quite a while now, Villagers have been requesting more upscale, club-style dining in the Village. Greg Jones, the owner of the Xplore restaurant chain in Hot Springs Village, is answering this call for expanded service. There is good news and bad news. But the bad news is only temporary and leads to the good news.
First, the Bad News
Xplore Lakeside is temporarily closed as of Christmas Eve at 2 p.m. and will not be reopening until, tentatively, mid-January. This is a necessary step in order to achieve Jones’ vision. While the restaurant will be missed during this time period, there are other exciting new developments on the horizon, so put on your reading glasses, if necessary, and get ready to hear some good news. Mr. Jones thanks you in advance for your patience during this time of change.
Now for the Good News
During this short hiatus, Xplore staff is working diligently on the development of an all-new, more upscale menu. This new deluxe fare will include more steak and seafood choices and chops, along with other new delicious menu items, guaranteed to please the discerning diner’s palate. More details of this new menu will be coming out shortly.
The Lakeside facility is also undergoing a bit of repair work and refurbishment. Jones is using this time period to make needed updates on the Lakeside facility. Some of these updates and revamps include repairs of kitchen exhausts, flooring, fencing, and docks. Additionally, they are shoring up the rip rap along the lakeside and making refinements in the landscaping. Restauranteur Jones envisions a total more upscale dining experience.
As if this news wasn’t enough, there are even more exciting announcements for Xplore restaurants.
Xplore DeSoto Update
Jones stated, “In the meantime, we will reopen the Xplore DeSoto Club for Sunday brunch and weeknight dinners soon. (More details are listed below.) We will be moving our All-You-Can-Eat Catfish and Fried Chicken night to DeSoto from Lakeside. Look for a new DeSoto menu possibly published as soon as this week.”
Jazz Concert Series Moving from Beehive to Xplore DeSoto
Update: The Xplore Concert Series will remain at the Beehive. There will be a limited selection of new menu items.
“Starting with brunch on Sunday, January 16th we will be having a ‘Come Have Brunch, Stay for Jazz’ event once a month in conjunction with the Hot Springs Jazz Society to allow us to expand our Sunday Jazz series.” It’s been hugely successful,” Jones said. Previously this concert series was held at the Beehive Neighborhood Hangout.
Jones shared, “The Van Houten/La Madrid Ensemble will perform at the Xplore Jazz concert on Sunday, January 16th At Xplore DeSoto the Beehive Neighborhood Hangout in Hot Springs Village. Come at 1:00 p.m. if you would like to have a lovely brunch meal before the concert at 2:00 p.m. $10 cash cover charge. Jon Edward Van Houten on sax, flute, guitar, and vocals. Kristen La Madrid on keyboard and vocals. Taylor Smith on bass and vocals. Brandon Brockinton is on drums. World Class Jazz right here in the Village.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t I read that in his contract with the POA that they (WE) will pay for all upkeep and any repairs, etc. on his restaurants?

Jean, good question. Xplore Lakeside is not under contract with the POA. In other words, the POA does not own the location and does not pay for Xplore Lakeside repairs.

Thank you so much! We read things and it takes research and a lot of questions to get the truth.

While we would ALL like things OUR way.. i will note we need to thank Greg and his staff to the tune of about $750k per year. About a year ago the POA was running most all of the restaurants and while they were open more .. they were losing over $870k of our POA dues dollars every year. Could it be better ? sure.. is it better already .. YES

We need a good down home cooking restaurant like Home Plate, on the east end. Not every place needs to be ” upscale”.

I agree. That is why “last chance” worked. If I want upscale, we have several very nice restaurants that serve good portions. The Italian one in the village, Blue Springs, Japanese steak house. And all the ones in town. My husband and I eat out a lot and for the most part like more down-home cooking. If we did not eat out much maybe it would be different.

I agree regarding more “down home” style restaurants, not expensive upscale restaurants. I would also like to see Xplore Lakeside offer food that could be picked up from the dock and taken out on the lake for sunset cruises, or boating picnics during the day. Food such as burgers, sandwiches, cheese plates, etc. Also, the restaurants are constantly changing menu items, operating hours, restaurant names, etc that it has become too confusing. We need consistency, dependability and reasonably priced menu selections.

We would welcome a more upscale restaurant. We loved the halibut with buerre blanc sauce with shallots and asparagus and were disappointed when that menu item disappeared. We appreciate the effort to have menu items that are more nutritious and hope you will continue to offer grass-fed beef, as well as consider wild salmon. Organic salads (or at least salads with greens other than romaine and iceberg lettuce) would be wonderful! There are enough restaurants around that serve only fried foods and things with bread and buns.

Looking forward to a very positive 2022. Sounds like a lot of hard work was invested in these developments? Appreciate the enhancements and creativity; but most of all, the continued strong efforts and contributions of Greg Jones and dedicated staff. Let’s join together in celebrating what will surely benefit all of us. Together, we can overcome pandemic restrictions of 2021 by getting out and supporting these developments, and HSV in general.

No one has yet solved the problem of too many restaurants chasing too few customers with too irregular hours, too frequent changes, and too erratic quality. Somebody needs to take a lesson from McDonalds, Sonic, El Jimador and Home Plate.

Dining out and explore take on a whole new meaning. So it’s upscale Lakeside; downscale De Soto. Sure what else is new in the village air!

Sue, Now that’s Funnny, 🥴 here’s part 2 , close off the UP SCALE BAR with petitions, Put back the 6 TV’s , put the curve back in the bar , bring back a couple of booths and the 3 four top tables, DOWN SCALE your adult beverage prices like they were at Last Chance , as far as the rest of the OPEN AREA UPSCALE it all u want, just a thought

Again it’s funny that people want “Upscale” !!!!! You wanted your upscale store on Ponce and DeSoto too and that went belly up. You want and don’t want to pay for it. How many times will you be there per week to make it worth it to stock your upscale foods ??? Once a week or twice a month won’t cut it folks. Quit asking for so much and running people out of business.
