Press Release
Ricky Middleton, Chief of Police, Hot Springs Village Police Department announced on 1-18-2022 at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officers and the Hot Springs Fire Department dive team recovered the body of the missing kayaker (Andrew Maestas) from Lake DeSoto in Hot Springs Village. Garland County Coroner was called to the scene.
This was a very unfortunate accident. Our prayers go out to the families involved.
Thanks to all the responding agencies that assisted in our rescue and recovery efforts.

Just a quick question. I read that they had to throw a life jacked to Olivia which made me wonder. Aren’t kayakers required to wear a life jacket? I thought was a rule. Did someone rent them a Kayak without a life jacket?

I believe the AR law states under age 12 must wear a life jacket. Otherwise one must be “accessible” (which doesn’t mean worn).

It makes my heart heavy with sadness for this young couple just starting their lives together. The pain their family’s have to endure for the rest of their lives. Every thing this young woman will carry with her for the rest of her life. Prayers for everyone involved. Thanks to the rescue team for not giving up till the young man was found. All the prayers that our community have prayed. God Bless to them all, give them strength to go forward.
