Hot Springs Village Players – Meet the Production Cast of Words

By Terry Boudreaux, HSVP Publicity Coordinator, February 3, 2022

MEET THE PRODUCTION CAST BEHIND THE WORLD PREMIERE OF WORDS

The Hot Springs Village Players’ rehearsals for WORDS, an original play soon to be performed at the Coronado Center, are enthusiastic, according to its production staff: Glenn Calloway, Writer, and Director; Toby Hamilton, Assistant Director; and Katherine (Kat) Clayton, Producer.

WORDS is a two-act play, narrated by the “writer” of the play, who interacts with the audience as they participate in the creative process together. The playwright, Glenn Calloway, who moved to HSV from California, has a very impressive background in the performing arts. Calloway began as an actor, performing major roles on stage such as “Henry” in Henry the V111, “Stanley” in Street Car Named Desire, “Morrie” in Tuesdays with Morrie, “Aunt Martha” in Arsenic and Old Lace, “Scrooge” in The Music and the Play, “Charles Condomin” in Blythe Spirit, “Mike Michell” in Sunday in New York, “Bogy” in Play It Again Sam, “Mr. White” in Sunset Express, “Zus” in JB, “Richard Sherman” in Seven Year Itch, “Prof. Harold Hill” in The Music Man, and twenty-five others. Eventually, Calloway became a director and received many awards for both his acting and directing work. Appearances on television, in commercials, and in movies led to his next step: teaching others to act and direct, as he did in California and is now doing for the HSV Players.

Assistant Director, Toby Hamilton, has been a member of the HSV Players for several years, having appeared in the men’s ensemble as a farmer in Oklahoma!, as “Peace Onearth” in Murder at the Midnight Hour, as “Aunt Martha” in Arsenic and Old Lace, and as the on-stage Foley artist in radio and backstage work in Damn Yankees. Hamilton has served as secretary of the HSV Players and on the planning committee for its 40th-anniversary celebration. She is delighted to work as assistant director with the talented cast and crew of Words. “It’s been an outstanding opportunity to work closely with the cast and I especially thank playwright/director Glenn Calloway for his support and mentoring,” says Hamilton.

Producer Katherine Clayton joined the HSV players in 2016, the same year she moved to the Village from Texas. No stranger to the stage, Clayton has acted since childhood in various plays and musicals and has experience in broadcasting. She co-directed In 25 Words or Death and directed Play On, two past Village Players Productions. Out of the various shows with the HSV Players, she is most remembered for her role as “Ado Annie” in the musical, Oklahoma!. Though she has both acted and directed, Clayton reports, “This is my first play to produce, and I stepped up at the eleventh hour, when no one else volunteered.”

Performances will be February 17, 18, and 19 at The Coronado Center. Mark your calendars and come PLAY with us!
