Jama Wegeng Lopez – 2022 HSVPOA Board Candidate

My purpose in seeking a position on the HSVPOA Board of Directors is to represent the property owners in a fair and equitable manner for the benefit of all property owners and the Village as a whole. Ensuring resources are spent as promised and encouraging open and clear lines of communication are tantamount to the successful governance of the Village. As a board member, I will provide strong ethics and a tireless commitment. My consensus-building skills and dedication to accountability, along with my extensive business experience, will be an asset to the board.

PERSONAL

My first twenty-four years were spent in a small town in central Illinois, where my four siblings and I were raised in a traditional family. My commitment to non-profits and volunteerism was instilled in me from an early age as I watched my parents step forward numerous times to volunteer when needed. In 2011, I moved from Texas to Hot Springs Village and became a property owner in 2012. I have come to love what the Village offers for numerous reasons, including the friendly and diverse population, the multitude of amenities, and the exceptional natural beauty, to name just a few.

Currently, I enjoy restoring and maintaining a classic car collection. I attended a year in Automotive Technology at National Park College and found that experience to be one of the highlights of my time here in Arkansas.

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL

In 1988, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. I began my career as an auditor with KPMG Peat Marwick in San Antonio, Texas. I then moved to a large regional CPA firm that provided services for many of the larger non-profits in the San Antonio area. In my last twelve years in San Antonio, I was the contract CFO/Controller for numerous non-profits.

Throughout my career, I served multiple years on the Board of the Texas Society of CPAs and the San Antonio Chapter. In 2001, I was elected Board President of the San Antonio Chapter of CPAs. I have also served as Chairman of the Board for a children’s hospital and Community Advisor for the San Antonio Junior League Board of Directors.

In June 2020, I was called in to help manage the HSVPOA accounting department with the resignation of our past CFO, Liz Mathis. For POA protection under E&O insurance, I was an employee and paid $10 per hour. My job was to transition the accounting department from the CFO to whoever was to be hired as the Controller. In this position, it was also my responsibility to collect and prepare the supporting documentation needed to apply for forgiveness of the Paycheck Protection Program loan, which was then successfully converted to a grant. The time spent at the POA administrative offices was truly enjoyable and enlightening.

My extensive experience in non-profit accounting, auditing, and previous board positions will bring considerable value to the HSVPOA Board of Directors.
